The case of the hostile balloons!

What you will need:

2 Balloons
2 pieces of string
A wooly sweater

How to do this experiment:

Blow up both balloons as much as possible without bursting them
Tie them with the strings
Rub both on your sweater for a few minutes
What happens?
Why do you think it happens?
What happens to the balloon closest to your sweater?

After you have rubbed the balloons on your sweater, they are both negatively laden with electrons they withdrew from your sweater. Because the sweater has given off the electrons it is now positively laden, this is why the balloon closest to your sweater sticks to your sweater while the two balloons drift far apart. So, what does that tell you about two objects that are negative or positively laden?

The case of the water “bend!”

What you will need for this experiment:

A plastic spoon
A wooly sweater
Access to a reliable tap where you can turn it on to make a really small little stream of water

How to do this project:

Rub the spoon against the wooly sweater for a few minutes
Open the tap so it makes the smallest stream possible
Bring the spoon close to the water stream
What happens?
Why do you think it happens?
Read the explanation about static electricity in the first of this series on static electricity.

At first the electrically laden plastic spoon draws the water. Should the spoon touch the water, the experiment is over as water is a good conductor of electricity and will immediately draw the electricity from the spoon and the spoon will not be charged any more. Therefore it will stop “bending” the water. This is why experiments on static electricity works better on dry days than on days that are very humid.

The case of the dancing snake

What you need for this experiment:

A piece of tissue paper about 4 inches by 4 inches
A pair of scissors
A pen
A wooly sweater
A lid of a tin, big enough for your snake to fit on

How to do this experiment:

Cut a spiral formed “snake” our of the tissue paper
Place it on your lid
Bend the head of your “snake” so it is upward
Rub your pen on the wooly sweater for a few minutes
Hold it an inch or so above the snake
What happens?
Why do you think it happens?
Try and explain it after reading the explanation in the first experiment in this series on this blog
Why do you think we placed it on the tine lid?
Does it play any role in the “snake dance?”

The clue here is that when you hold the electrically charged pen close to the snake which is uncharged it is drawn to the pen and lifts up toward the pen. The moment the electrons pass to the snake, the tin lid absorbs it and the snake is once again uncharged. That is why it keeps on lifting again and again.

Here is the next project in our series of science fair projects kids will enjoy. In this one we are going to try and separate finely ground pepper from salt! It is so important for kids to enjoy science that it is always good to do fun science experiments with them.

For a good science fair project you have to make notes of all your steps, saying what you are doing and why you are doing it. You must formulate a hypothesis, sdo the experiment according to the correct scientific method and think of your display. It is always a good idea to take photos as you go.

The case of the pepper and the salt:

What you need:

Very fine pepper
Salt
A plastic spoon
A woolly sweater

What you have to do:

Sprinkle quite a bit of the pepper and salt on the table
Make sure you mix them well
Rub the plastic spoon on the sweater for a few minutes
Hold it above the mixture on the table, not too low but high enough for the pepper to attach to it
What happens?
What did you do when you rubbed the spoon on the sweater?

You must make sure the spoon is high enough, if it is not high enough the salt, that is heavier than the pepper, will also be able to jump as high as the pepper and the two will not separate.

Easy Science For Kid

Getting easy science for a kid is easier than you may think. You can teach your kid science in the home everyday with normal household goods and stuff you keep in the house. Make it a game and the kids learn easy science without even realizing it.

Easy Science For Kid – How fat is certain kinds of things:

This is an easy experiment to find out which foods contain a lot of fat and which ones does not contain a lot of fat. Of course this is not a complete science fair experiment, but only and indication of an idea. What you need for this easy science for kid:

A sheet of paper
A pencil
Margarine
Lemon
Potato chips
Peanut butter
Honey
Cream

How to do this easy science for kid:

Draw six small circles on your piece of paper
Write down the name of each of your food as mentioned above under one of the circles so that you have one circle marking for each of the food stuff you have. You can of course use more if you want to do a little more.
Now you have to rub a bit of each kind of food onto the circle marked with that kind of food’s name so you will know which food is on which circle.
Leave it for about fifteen minutes.
Now you have to examine the paper on both sides.
What has happened?
Why do you think it happened?

You will notice that some of the spots are dry. Some of the others will be greasy and the spot will be spreading. Do you know why this happened? Well, both water and fat make a spot on paper by filling in the spaces between the fibers of the paper. When the water in the spots made by foods with water evaporates, the spot becomes dry. The spots made by the fat however, do not dry as the fat globules can only be broken down by soap or some kind of solvent such as ether. For this reason the fat spot remains and spreads while the water spot disappears

This is a simple example of easy science for kid that can be done very easily and it is therefore very suitable for homeschooling.

This science project is one of our examples of science fair projects where you actually proof two related characteristics of air. You will prove that air has weight and that, because of the weight, air pressure is strong enough to bend a can. We are going to use the principle that as air heats up; it has a greater volume and if it is in a container some of the air will escape from the container. Then by screwing a top on the container we are going to prevent the air from going back in when the container cools down.

CAUTION: This example science fair project must be done with adult supervision as heat is used.

What you will need for this experiment:

Large container
A can with a screw top (you get cans of olive oil that will be the ideal can)
Water
Stove
Oven mitts
Ice
Dish cloth
A scale
Note book
Pen
Camera

How to do this science experiment:

For your display, it is a good idea to take a photo of the can in its original state.
Fill the large container with water and ice and put it to one side until you need it.
With a finely calibrated scale, weigh the can with the screw top on.
Make a note of this weight.
Remove the screw top.
Put the can on the burner on the stove.
Heat the can until it is very hot.
Using the oven mitts, remove the can from the stove and, working quickly, screw the top on the can and place it in the cold water.
Observe what happens, write it down and take a photo.
When the can has cooled down, wipe it dry and weigh it.
Make a note of the weight and take a photo.
What has happened?
Why do you think it happened, remember we said in the beginning that we are going to prove two things?

What happens is that the air pressure bends the can. Why can we say that? What did we do to remove air from the can so that the air pressure on the outside is more than in the inside?

The other thing that happens is that the can now weighs less. Why is that? Think of what we have done with the air in the can.
