<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #808000;"><strong>The case of the dancing paper dolls:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #808000;"><strong>What you need for your experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">

<li>Two books</li>
<li>A glass disk</li>
<li>A metal plate</li>
<li>Two books</li>
<li>Tissue paper dolls about 3cm tall (cut any way you prefer as long as they not too big)</li>
<li>A woolen cloth</li>
</ul>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #808000;"><strong>How to do your experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Cut out your paper dolls (about 3-4)</li>
<li>Place two books a little way apart with the metal plate between them</li>
<li>Place the glass disk over them to be over the metal plate</li>
<li>Place the paper dolls in the metal plate</li>
<li>What happens when you place the paper dolls on the metal plate under the glass disk?</li>
<li>Now rub the glass disk with the woolen cloth for a few minutes</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why does it happen?</li>
</ol>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ul>
<li>By rubbing the glass disk with the woolen cloth it is loaded with electron to make it negative</li>
<li>Now the disk draws the positively laden paper dolls and they are also loaded</li>
<li>Now they drop down and the metal plate draws the electrons from them, once again making them positive</li>
<li>Now the glass draws them again and so the dance continues</li>
</ul>

<li>2 Balloons</li>
<li>2 pieces of string</li>
<li>A wooly sweater</li>
</ul>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>How to do this experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Blow up both balloons as much as possible without bursting them</li>
<li>Tie them with the strings</li>
<li>Rub both on your sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why do you think it happens?</li>
<li>What happens to the balloon closest to your sweater?</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal">After you have rubbed the balloons on your sweater, they are both negatively laden with electrons they withdrew from your sweater. Because the sweater has given off the electrons it is now positively laden, this is why the balloon closest to your sweater sticks to your sweater while the two balloons drift far apart. So, what does that tell you about two objects that are negative or positively laden?</p>

<li>Access to a reliable tap where you can turn it on to make a really small little stream of water</li>
</ul>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>How to do this project:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Rub the spoon against the wooly sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Open the tap so it makes the smallest stream possible</li>
<li>Bring the spoon close to the water stream</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why do you think it happens?</li>
<li>Read the explanation about static electricity in the first of this series on static electricity.</li>

<p class="MsoNormal">At first the electrically laden plastic spoon draws the water. Should the spoon touch the water, the experiment is over as water is a good conductor of electricity and will immediately draw the electricity from the spoon and the spoon will not be charged any more. Therefore it will stop &#8220;bending&#8221; the water. This is why experiments on static electricity works better on dry days than on days that are very humid.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>What you need for this experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">

<li>A piece of tissue paper about 4 inches by 4 inches</li>
<li>A pair of scissors</li>
<li>A pen</li>
<li>A wooly sweater</li>
<li>A lid of a tin, big enough for your snake to fit on</li>
</ul>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>How to do this experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Cut a spiral formed &#8220;snake&#8221; our of the tissue paper</li>
<li>Place it on your lid</li>
<li>Bend the head of your &#8220;snake&#8221; so it is upward</li>
<li>Rub your pen on the wooly sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Hold it an inch or so above the snake</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why do you think it happens?</li>
<li>Try and explain it after reading the explanation in the first experiment in this series on this blog</li>
<li>Why do you think we placed it on the tine lid?</li>
<li>Does it play any role in the &#8220;snake dance?&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">The clue here is that when you hold the electrically charged pen close to the snake which is uncharged it is drawn to the pen and lifts up toward the pen. The moment the electrons pass to the snake, the tin lid absorbs it and the snake is once again uncharged. That is why it keeps on lifting again and again.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">For a good science fair project you have to make notes of all your steps, saying what you are doing and why you are doing it. You must formulate a hypothesis, sdo the experiment according to the correct scientific method and think of your display. It is always a good idea to take photos as you go.</p>

<h3 class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;">The case of the pepper and the salt:</span></h3>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>What you need:</strong></span></p>

<li>Very fine pepper</li>
<li>Salt</li>
<li>A plastic spoon</li>
<li>A woolly sweater</li>
</ul>

<li>Sprinkle quite a bit of the pepper and salt on the table</li>
<li>Make sure you mix them well</li>
<li>Rub the plastic spoon on the sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Hold it above the mixture on the table, not too low but high enough for the pepper to attach to it</li>

<h3 class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff9900;"><strong>The case of the clinging balloons:</strong></span></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff9900;"><strong>What you will need:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">

<li>A few balloons</li>
<li>A woolly sweater</li>
</ul>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff9900;"><strong>This is what you have to do:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Blow up your balloons and tie them securely</li>
<li>Rub the balloons against your sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Now press them against the ceiling</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>What did you do when you rubbed the balloons against your sweater?</li>
<li>How does that make the balloons cling to the ceiling?</li>
<li>Make note of how long they stay there</li>
<li>Do you think there are factors that can make them fall down sooner or hang there for a longer period?</li>
<li>Try boiling a kettle in the room and see what happens (let an adult help here!)</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal">By rubbing the balloons against your sweater you are charging the balloons with electricity. How? They absorb small particles called electrons, which are negative electrical particles, from the sweater.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Because objects that are electrically charged draws objects that are not electrically charged, the balloons &#8220;stick&#8221; to the ceiling until they are no longer electrically charged.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Normally the balloons will stay there for a long time as the ceiling is a very weak conductor and the electrons flow very slowly through the ceiling because a room is normally very dry. If you room is a little more humid, it will take longer. It may be a good idea to do two experiments, one in dry air and one in humidity and see if your results differ.</p>

<li>Attach the two plastic bags to the stick one at each end</li>
<li>Balance the stick with the bags on the thumbnail on the corner of a table like a balance scale</li>
<li>Put one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass</li>
<li>Add a few drops of the vinegar, enough to make a reaction.</li>
<li>You will notice that it is beginning to make foam as the gas escapes from it.</li>
<li>Place the opening of the glass over one of the plastic bags</li>
<li>What happens to your scale? It tilts to the side where you have placed the opening of the glass over the plastic bag</li>
<li>The gas the escaped during the chemical reaction was carbon dioxide and it is heavier than air</li>
<li>That is why you could &#8220;pour&#8221; it into the plastic bag</li>
<li>If you were to fill a balloon with this gas, it will never be able to float, for it to float you will have to fill it with a gas lighter than air such as helium.</li>
<li>What is the conclusion of your experiment? Does carbon dioxide have weight? Does carbon dioxide weight more or less than air?</li>

<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">In this experiment we are going to try and show that air and carbon dioxide have weight and that it can actually be weighed! These experiments should be done under supervision from an adult.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">When doing experiments, always remember to make notes for your display and also take photos of every step for your display.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #0000ff;"><strong>The first one, that we are going to do in this article, is for air:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="color: #3366ff;">When you have finished your experiment, you should be able to answer the following questions:</span></strong></p>

<li>What is in the balloons after you have blown them up?</li>
<li>Why is it that it is possible to balance the stick with the two balloons of the same size?</li>
<li>Do you think both balloons have the same size?</li>
<li>What happens when you prick one of the balloons?</li>
<li>What does this mean?</li>

<li>Blow up both balloons so that they are exactly the same size</li>
<li>Tie one to each side of the stick</li>
<li>Now hang the stick somewhere so that the balloons are balanced. Use the sting to do it with.</li>
<li>Let the air out of one of the balloons by pricking it</li>
<li>Now you can try and answer the questions above.</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal">At first it is very easy to balance the two balloons because they weight the same. The balloons with the air inside them have the same weight. When you prick the one balloon you are letting the air out of that balloon. Now the stick is dropping to the side with inflated balloon. This means the deflated balloon is now lighter. This again must mean that air has weight.</p>

<li>A box of paper clips</li>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #000080;"><strong>How to do this cool science fair project:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Take your healthy potted plant and place it on a windowsill that gets enough sun.</li>
<li>Now you place the two boxes on each side of the plant taking care not to shade the plant.</li>
<li>Lay the plastic across the boxes and let it hang down the two sides of the boxes.</li>
<li>Make two chains that are identical with the paper clips</li>
<li>Lay these chains over the clear plastic so that it hangs down the sides of the boxes.</li>
<li>Arrange them evenly and mark their positions on the boxes.</li>
<li>Now you care for the plant as normal.</li>
<li>Check and mark the positions of the chains from time to time</li>
</ol>

<li>Measure the markings as they move up the boxes.</li>

<p class="MsoNormal">This experiment shows us how strong plants are. As the plant grows it pushes the plastic and thus the chains up. Now you can see how plants can be so incredibly strong and grow through blocks of cement and why weeds push through the sidewalk cracks to reach the light (Plants need light to stay alive and grow)</p>
