Science Fair Food Projects – How To Stop Food From Rotting

For a good science fair project you have to make notes of all your steps, saying what you are doing and why you are doing it. You must formulate a hypothesis, and do the experiment according to the correct scientific method and think of your display. It is always a good idea to take photos as you go. This experiment is going to show us why some substances can be used as preservatives. What is a preservative? In this experiment we are going to look at natural preservatives and not chemicals developed by scientists.

Science fair food projects always have a very practical lesson for the kids to learn and this one is no exception. They will see why some ordinary household food ingredients have been used for centuries to preserve food, especially before refrigerators and freezers where available!

After the project has been completed, let an adult dispose of all the food as it may be rotting. It is also best to let an adult do all the cutting involved.

What you will need for your experiment:

An apple sliced into six equal pieces
6 Small jars
Enough salt to fill a jar
Enough sugar to fill a jar
Enough antibacterial soap to fill a jar
Enough vinegar to fill a jar
Enough water to fill a jar
A felt tipped pen
Some paper plates
Labels to label your jars with
A knife
Disposable utensils to work with the rotting apple pieces (so your hands do not come into contact with them.)

How to do your experiment:

Label the jars as follows: sugar, salt, vinegar, antibacterial soap, water and control.
Do you know what the “control” is for? This goes towards the proper scientific method.
Now you place a piece of apple in each jar.
Remember to take photos of each step for your display
Now you have to completely cover the apple pieces with each substance.
In the jar marked “sugar,” you cover the piece of apple completely with sugar and in the jar marked “salt” you cover the piece of apple completely with salt etc.
In the jar marked “control” you do not cover the piece of apple with anything.
Do you know why you do not cover the piece in the “control” bottle with anything?
Now you have to place the jars in a cool place
After one week your take the jars and examine their contents.
Make detailed notes of all the changes and do not forget to take photos
When you want to look at the pieces in the sugar and salt where you cannot see through the substances, throw them out on a paper plate and use the disposable utensils to dig them out and look at them
Which apple pieces rotted?
Which of the pieces have the appearance that they have been preserved?
Do the preserved pieces appear dried out?
Can you observe any color changes in the pieces of apple?
Can you notice any difference in the texture of the apple pieces?
These are all the things you have think of and make meticulous notes of.
Remember your photos!
Now it is only a case of putting your display together and you will have done one of our fun science fair food projects.

In this experiment we are going to see how to objects that are negatively laden are attracted to objects that are positively laden. Once the objects are no longer negatively laden, they are not drawn by a positively laden object any more.

The case of the dancing paper dolls:

What you need for your experiment:

Two books
A glass disk
A metal plate
Two books
Tissue paper dolls about 3cm tall (cut any way you prefer as long as they not too big)
A woolen cloth

How to do your experiment:

Cut out your paper dolls (about 3-4)
Place two books a little way apart with the metal plate between them
Place the glass disk over them to be over the metal plate
Place the paper dolls in the metal plate
What happens when you place the paper dolls on the metal plate under the glass disk?
Now rub the glass disk with the woolen cloth for a few minutes
What happens?
Why does it happen?

By rubbing the glass disk with the woolen cloth it is loaded with electron to make it negative
Now the disk draws the positively laden paper dolls and they are also loaded
Now they drop down and the metal plate draws the electrons from them, once again making them positive
Now the glass draws them again and so the dance continues

I think this can be quite a good display for your friends to admire!

In this experiment we are going to see how to a spoon, laden with static electricity, will draw puffed wheat or rice to it. Opposite to a negative and a negative “pushing” each other away as in our previous example.

What you will need for this experiment:

A bowl of puffed wheat or rice
A plastic teaspoon
A wooly sweater

How to do your experiment:

Without doing anything to the spoon, keep it just above the bowl of puffed wheat or rice.
What happens?
Rub the spoon on your sweater for a few minutes to load it with the extra electrons until it is negative.
Now hold the spoon just above the bowl of puffed wheat or rice.
What happens?
Keep the spoon there.
Why does it happen?
What happens after a short while?

The case of the hostile balloons!

What you will need:

2 Balloons
2 pieces of string
A wooly sweater

How to do this experiment:

Blow up both balloons as much as possible without bursting them
Tie them with the strings
Rub both on your sweater for a few minutes
What happens?
Why do you think it happens?
What happens to the balloon closest to your sweater?

After you have rubbed the balloons on your sweater, they are both negatively laden with electrons they withdrew from your sweater. Because the sweater has given off the electrons it is now positively laden, this is why the balloon closest to your sweater sticks to your sweater while the two balloons drift far apart. So, what does that tell you about two objects that are negative or positively laden?

The case of the water “bend!”

What you will need for this experiment:

A plastic spoon
A wooly sweater
Access to a reliable tap where you can turn it on to make a really small little stream of water

How to do this project:

Rub the spoon against the wooly sweater for a few minutes
Open the tap so it makes the smallest stream possible
Bring the spoon close to the water stream
What happens?
Why do you think it happens?

At first the electrically laden plastic spoon draws the water. Should the spoon touch the water, the experiment is over as water is a good conductor of electricity and will immediately draw the electricity from the spoon and the spoon will not be charged any more. Therefore it will stop “bending” the water. This is why experiments on static electricity works better on dry days than on days that are very humid.

The case of the dancing snake

What you need for this experiment:

A piece of tissue paper about 4 inches by 4 inches
A pair of scissors
A pen
A wooly sweater
A lid of a tin, big enough for your snake to fit on

How to do this experiment:

Cut a spiral formed “snake” our of the tissue paper
Place it on your lid
Bend the head of your “snake” so it is upward
Rub your pen on the wooly sweater for a few minutes
Hold it an inch or so above the snake
What happens?
Why do you think it happens?
Try and explain it after reading the explanation in the first experiment in this series on this blog
Why do you think we placed it on the tine lid?
Does it play any role in the “snake dance?”

The clue here is that when you hold the electrically charged pen close to the snake which is uncharged it is drawn to the pen and lifts up toward the pen. The moment the electrons pass to the snake, the tin lid absorbs it and the snake is once again uncharged. That is why it keeps on lifting again and again.

Here is the next project in our series of science fair projects kids will enjoy. In this one we are going to try and separate finely ground pepper from salt! It is so important for kids to enjoy science that it is always good to do fun science experiments with them.

For a good science fair project you have to make notes of all your steps, saying what you are doing and why you are doing it. You must formulate a hypothesis, sdo the experiment according to the correct scientific method and think of your display. It is always a good idea to take photos as you go.

The case of the pepper and the salt:

What you need:

Very fine pepper
Salt
A plastic spoon
A woolly sweater

What you have to do:

Sprinkle quite a bit of the pepper and salt on the table
Make sure you mix them well
Rub the plastic spoon on the sweater for a few minutes
Hold it above the mixture on the table, not too low but high enough for the pepper to attach to it
What happens?
What did you do when you rubbed the spoon on the sweater?

You must make sure the spoon is high enough, if it is not high enough the salt, that is heavier than the pepper, will also be able to jump as high as the pepper and the two will not separate.

All kids love the fun you can have with static electricity. This is why this is one of our science fair projects kids will really enjoy doing. This is a series of short experiments showing static electricity in action. The kids will be able to do most of it alone and all the supplies are readily available.

Here are our science fair projects kids will enjoy:

The case of the clinging balloons:

What you will need:

A few balloons
A woolly sweater

This is what you have to do:

Blow up your balloons and tie them securely
Rub the balloons against your sweater for a few minutes
Now press them against the ceiling
What happens?
What did you do when you rubbed the balloons against your sweater?
How does that make the balloons cling to the ceiling?
Make note of how long they stay there
Do you think there are factors that can make them fall down sooner or hang there for a longer period?
Try boiling a kettle in the room and see what happens (let an adult help here!)

By rubbing the balloons against your sweater you are charging the balloons with electricity. How? They absorb small particles called electrons, which are negative electrical particles, from the sweater.

Because objects that are electrically charged draws objects that are not electrically charged, the balloons “stick” to the ceiling until they are no longer electrically charged.

Normally the balloons will stay there for a long time as the ceiling is a very weak conductor and the electrons flow very slowly through the ceiling because a room is normally very dry. If you room is a little more humid, it will take longer. It may be a good idea to do two experiments, one in dry air and one in humidity and see if your results differ.

We all know kids love exploring and finding out things. It is important that we use this time to make them love science. This is what these science fair projects kids will love are all about.

It is very important for kids to love doing science projects. The best way to start is to let them do some fun projects and show them how it can be turned into a science fair project. Here is one of our science fair projects kids will love to do.

All science projects should always be done with adults there for safety’s sake!

Throughout this experiment it is good to make notes of everything you do and also to take photos of each step for your display.

Questions you will be able to answer after you have completed this project:

Why is it possible to balance the stick with the two bags like a balance scale?
What is inside the bags?
What is produced when you mix the bicarbonate of soda and vinegar?
Why are you able to “pour” it into the plastic bag?
Why does the stick tilt?
What has happened?

Do you thing carbon dioxide has weight? Well, let’s find out!

What you need for this experiment:

2 Plastic bags of the same size
A stick of about 20 inches
A Thumbnail
Vinegar
Bicarbonate of soda
A glass
A teaspoon
A note book
A pen
A camera

How to do this science fair project for kids:

Attach the two plastic bags to the stick one at each end
Balance the stick with the bags on the thumbnail on the corner of a table like a balance scale
Put one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass
Add a few drops of the vinegar, enough to make a reaction.
You will notice that it is beginning to make foam as the gas escapes from it.
Place the opening of the glass over one of the plastic bags
What happens to your scale? It tilts to the side where you have placed the opening of the glass over the plastic bag
The gas the escaped during the chemical reaction was carbon dioxide and it is heavier than air
That is why you could “pour” it into the plastic bag
If you were to fill a balloon with this gas, it will never be able to float, for it to float you will have to fill it with a gas lighter than air such as helium.
What is the conclusion of your experiment? Does carbon dioxide have weight? Does carbon dioxide weight more or less than air?

Do the air and other gases have weight?

In this experiment we are going to try and show that air and carbon dioxide have weight and that it can actually be weighed! These experiments should be done under supervision from an adult.

When doing experiments, always remember to make notes for your display and also take photos of every step for your display.

The first one, that we are going to do in this article, is for air:

When you have finished your experiment, you should be able to answer the following questions:

What is in the balloons after you have blown them up?
Why is it that it is possible to balance the stick with the two balloons of the same size?
Do you think both balloons have the same size?
What happens when you prick one of the balloons?
What does this mean?

What you will need:

2 Balloons
A stick
Scissors
A piece of string
A needle
A note book
A pen
A camera

How to do your experiment:

Blow up both balloons so that they are exactly the same size
Tie one to each side of the stick
Now hang the stick somewhere so that the balloons are balanced. Use the sting to do it with.
Let the air out of one of the balloons by pricking it
Now you can try and answer the questions above.

What is the conclusion?

At first it is very easy to balance the two balloons because they weight the same. The balloons with the air inside them have the same weight. When you prick the one balloon you are letting the air out of that balloon. Now the stick is dropping to the side with inflated balloon. This means the deflated balloon is now lighter. This again must mean that air has weight.
