<p>The purpose of the project is to show how plants carry nutrients and water to all the parts of the plant. Here is a fun way to show how it happens.</p>
<p><strong>Here&#8217;s what you will need:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>1 Fresh stalks of celery</li>
<li>2 Glasses of water</li>
<li>Red food coloring</li>
<li>A knife (let an adult help you with this)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>This is what you have to do:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Put the two glasses of water next to each other</li>
<li>The one glass is going to be your control (do you know what a control is?)</li>
<li>Color the water in the one glass dark red by dropping four to five drops of red food coloring into it</li>
<li>Now you have to cut off the dried bottom part of  the stalk of celery</li>
<li>Cut the stalk in half from the bottom to the leaves.</li>
<li>place one half in the clear water and the other in the colored water and make sure they are standing securely and will not fall over.</li>
<li>Check on your project every hour to see what is happening</li>
<li>Make meticulous notes and take photos if it is possible, for your display</li>
</ol>

<p>This is one of our examples of science fair projects where adult supervision is needed as heat is going to be used and because of the potential danger of the mold growing.</p>

<li>4 Slices of bread</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>3 Sealable plastic bags,      big enough for your slices of bread to fit in it</li>
</ul>

<li>A Pair of rubber gloves</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Tags to mark your bags with</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Pen</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>A knife</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Antiseptic cream</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>A piece of kitchen towel</li>

<li>A small plate</li>

<p>How to do your project:</p>
<p>1. We are going to use three different conditions: completely dry bread, normal bread as it is and bread spread with antiseptic cream. Our problem is to find out the conditions that speeds up decay, in this case the mold growing on the bread.</p>
<p>2. Formulate your hypothesis on what you think will happen</p>
<p>3. For your control place a piece of kitchen towel on a plate, place a slice of bread on the plate and place it in a cool dry place. (Why on a piece of paper towel?)</p>
<p>4. Take one of your slices of bread and completely dry it out in the oven at a very low heat.</p>
<p>5. Let it cool down completely. (Later on you should be able to give reason why it has to cool down completely)</p>
<p>6. Place the cold piece of &#8220;toast&#8221; in one of the plastic bags and mark it with a tag.</p>
<p>7. Place another slice of bread in one of the bags just as it is and mark the bag.</p>
<p>8. Spread your last slice of bread with antiseptic cream on both sides and place it in the last plastic bag and mark it.</p>
<p>9. Now you have to leave them in a warm (not hot) place.</p>
<p>10. Each day you have to make your observations, write it down and take a photo of your experiment. Do not forget your control.</p>
<p>11. Keep this up for a week.</p>
<p>12. You are now ready to write your conclusion, remember to give the reasons for what has happened to your slices of bread. Include your control in your conclusion. Your control shows what happens when you do not do anything, this id how you can draw the correct conclusion about what has happened to your other slices of bread.</p>
<p>* Do you know why the toast had to cool down completely before you placed it in the plastic bag?</p>
<p>* Is there only one reason for what happened to the toast or are there more than one?</p>
<p>* Why did you have to place your control on a piece of kitchen towel?</p>

<p>These preservation and decay examples of science fair projects are variations of some of the most well know examples of science fair projects with a twist in them. Look at what causes certain things decay faster than others and do the bread mold one a little different.</p>
<p>Caution: Because a knife is used in this experiment adult supervision is needed. It is also necessary that an adult make sure the kids do not handle the rotting fruit and vegetables without their gloves on. Although these examples of science fair projects are easy and all kids can do it, it is best done under adult supervision.</p>
<p><strong>What you need for your &#8220;what will decay&#8221; project</strong></p>
<p>* 3 Each of a variety of fruit and vegetables such as apples, pears, carrots, potatoes, oranges etc. The more fruit you have the better the picture you&#8217;ll get.</p>
<p>* A pair of rubber gloves</p>
<p>* A knife or peeler</p>
<p>* A small piece of plastic</p>
<p>* A stone</p>
<p>* A piece of wood</p>
<p>* A large plastic garden tray with holes in the bottom (big enough to hold all the fruit and vegetables you have)</p>
<p>* An old newspaper</p>
<p>* A bag of compost</p>
<p>* A garden spade</p>
<p>* Pen</p>
<p>* Note book</p>
<p>* Camera</p>

<p><strong>How to do your project:</strong></p>
<p>1. Formulate your problem and formulate your hypothesis before you start with your science experiment.</p>
<p>2. Make very detailed notes of every step of your science project and give the reason for everything you do.</p>
<p>3. For your control, keep one of each kind of your fruit in a dry cool place for the length of your project. Every time you dig up your project make sure to also make notes of what is happening with your control. Take photos to make it easier.</p>
<p>4. Line your garden tray with newspaper and cover it with a layer of compost.</p>
<p>5. Place the piece of plastic, stone and piece of wood in the tray.</p>
<p>6. Peal one each of all your fruit and vegetables, leaving one of each kind unpeeled.</p>
<p>7. Place one peeled and one unpeeled fruit and vegetable in the tray with the other objects.</p>
<p>8. Completely cover them with the compost.</p>
<p>9. Now get an adult to help you dog a shallow hole in the garden in a shady area.</p>
<p>10. Place your tray in the hole and cover it with soil until only the top edge of the tray is visible (so you can dig it up easily later)</p>
<p>11. Buried like this the fruit and vegetables will remain moist.</p>
<p>12. Leave your project for a week.</p>
<p>13. Dig the tray up.</p>
<p>14. Inspect all the fruit and vegetables as well as the plastic, stone and wood.</p>
<p>15. Make detailed notes of what you see.</p>
<p>16. Take photos of your tray with everything on it.</p>
<p>17. Bury your tray again in the same manner.</p>
<p>18. Leave your project for another week and repeat your observations.</p>
<p>19. Keep this up until some of your fruit and vegetables as decayed completely.</p>
<p>20. In dry climates it may be necessary to dampen the soil a little if it gets completely dry. Do not soak it though, simply dampen it a little.</p>
<p>21. Make sure that you make very clear notes about the stages of everything in your tray every time you take it out.</p>
<p>22. You must also make sure that you take enough high quality photos for your display.</p>
<p>23. Now you will be able to write your conclusion and to discuss your findings. Where your hypothesis correct? Remember, whether you were right or wrong is not important, what is important is that you followed the correct scientific method and how you arrived at your conclusion.</p>
<p>* Why did the fruit and vegetables with their skins on decay at a different rate than the peeled ones?</p>
<p>* Why did the plastic and the stone stay the same?</p>
<p>* What happened to your control fruit and vegetables and why?</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">For a good science fair project you have to make notes of all your steps, saying what you are doing and why you are doing it. You must formulate a hypothesis, and do the experiment according to the correct scientific method and think of your display. It is always a good idea to take photos as you go. <p class="MsoNormal">This experiment is going to show us why some substances can be used as preservatives. What is a preservative? In this experiment we are going to look at natural preservatives and not chemicals developed by scientists.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Science fair food projects always have a very practical lesson for the kids to learn and this one is no exception. They will see why some ordinary household food ingredients have been used for centuries to preserve food, especially before refrigerators and freezers where available!</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">After the project has been completed, let an adult dispose of all the food as it may be rotting. It is also best to let an adult do all the cutting involved.</p>

<li>Enough water to fill a jar</li>
<li>A felt tipped pen</li>
<li>Some paper plates</li>
<li>Labels to label your jars with</li>
<li>A knife</li>
<li>Disposable utensils to work with the rotting apple pieces (so your hands do not come into contact with them.)</li>

<li>Label the jars as follows: sugar, salt, vinegar, antibacterial soap, water and control.</li>
<li>Do you know what the &#8220;control&#8221; is for? This goes towards the proper scientific method.</li>
<li>Now you place a piece of apple in each jar.</li>
<li>Remember to take photos of each step for your display</li>
<li>Now you have to completely cover the apple pieces with each substance.</li>
<li>In the jar marked &#8220;sugar,&#8221; you cover the piece of apple completely with sugar and in the jar marked &#8220;salt&#8221; you cover the piece of apple completely with salt etc.</li>
<li>In the jar marked &#8220;control&#8221; you do not cover the piece of apple with anything.</li>
<li>Do you know why you do not cover the piece in the &#8220;control&#8221; bottle with anything?</li>
<li>Now you have to place the jars in a cool place</li>
<li>After one week your take the jars and examine their contents.</li>
<li>Make detailed notes of all the changes and do not forget to take photos</li>
<li>When you want to look at the pieces in the sugar and salt where you cannot see through the substances, throw them out on a paper plate and use the disposable utensils to dig them out and look at them</li>
<li>Which apple pieces rotted?</li>
<li>Which of the pieces have the appearance that they have been preserved?</li>
<li>Do the preserved pieces appear dried out?</li>
<li>Can you observe any color changes in the pieces of apple?</li>
<li>Can you notice any difference in the texture of the apple pieces?</li>
<li>These are all the things you have think of and make meticulous notes of.</li>
<li>Remember your photos!</li>
<li>Now it is only a case of putting your display together and you will have done one of our fun science fair food projects.</li>

<li>A glass disk</li>
<li>A metal plate</li>
<li>Two books</li>
<li>Tissue paper dolls about 3cm tall (cut any way you prefer as long as they not too big)</li>
<li>A woolen cloth</li>
</ul>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #808000;"><strong>How to do your experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Cut out your paper dolls (about 3-4)</li>
<li>Place two books a little way apart with the metal plate between them</li>
<li>Place the glass disk over them to be over the metal plate</li>
<li>Place the paper dolls in the metal plate</li>
<li>What happens when you place the paper dolls on the metal plate under the glass disk?</li>
<li>Now rub the glass disk with the woolen cloth for a few minutes</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why does it happen?</li>
</ol>
<p class="MsoNormal">

<li>By rubbing the glass disk with the woolen cloth it is loaded with electron to make it negative</li>
<li>Now the disk draws the positively laden paper dolls and they are also loaded</li>
<li>Now they drop down and the metal plate draws the electrons from them, once again making them positive</li>
<li>Now the glass draws them again and so the dance continues</li>
</ul>

<li>A wooly sweater</li>

<li>Blow up both balloons as much as possible without bursting them</li>
<li>Tie them with the strings</li>
<li>Rub both on your sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why do you think it happens?</li>
<li>What happens to the balloon closest to your sweater?</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal">After you have rubbed the balloons on your sweater, they are both negatively laden with electrons they withdrew from your sweater. Because the sweater has given off the electrons it is now positively laden, this is why the balloon closest to your sweater sticks to your sweater while the two balloons drift far apart. So, what does that tell you about two objects that are negative or positively laden?</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>What you will need for this experiment:</strong></span></p>

<li>A plastic spoon</li>
<li>A wooly sweater</li>
<li>Access to a reliable tap where you can turn it on to make a really small little stream of water</li>
</ul>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>How to do this project:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Rub the spoon against the wooly sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Open the tap so it makes the smallest stream possible</li>
<li>Bring the spoon close to the water stream</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why do you think it happens?</li>
<li>Read the explanation about static electricity in the first of this series on static electricity.</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal">At first the electrically laden plastic spoon draws the water. Should the spoon touch the water, the experiment is over as water is a good conductor of electricity and will immediately draw the electricity from the spoon and the spoon will not be charged any more. Therefore it will stop &#8220;bending&#8221; the water. This is why experiments on static electricity works better on dry days than on days that are very humid.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>What you need for this experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ul>
<li>A piece of tissue paper about 4 inches by 4 inches</li>
<li>A pair of scissors</li>
<li>A pen</li>
<li>A wooly sweater</li>
<li>A lid of a tin, big enough for your snake to fit on</li>
</ul>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>How to do this experiment:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Cut a spiral formed &#8220;snake&#8221; our of the tissue paper</li>
<li>Place it on your lid</li>
<li>Bend the head of your &#8220;snake&#8221; so it is upward</li>
<li>Rub your pen on the wooly sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Hold it an inch or so above the snake</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>Why do you think it happens?</li>
<li>Try and explain it after reading the explanation in the first experiment in this series on this blog</li>
<li>Why do you think we placed it on the tine lid?</li>
<li>Does it play any role in the &#8220;snake dance?&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">The clue here is that when you hold the electrically charged pen close to the snake which is uncharged it is drawn to the pen and lifts up toward the pen. The moment the electrons pass to the snake, the tin lid absorbs it and the snake is once again uncharged. That is why it keeps on lifting again and again.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">

<p class="MsoNormal">For a good science fair project you have to make notes of all your steps, saying what you are doing and why you are doing it. You must formulate a hypothesis, sdo the experiment according to the correct scientific method and think of your display. It is always a good idea to take photos as you go.</p>

<li>Very fine pepper</li>
<li>Salt</li>
<li>A plastic spoon</li>
<li>A woolly sweater</li>
</ul>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>What you have to do:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Sprinkle quite a bit of the pepper and salt on the table</li>
<li>Make sure you mix them well</li>
<li>Rub the plastic spoon on the sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Hold it above the mixture on the table, not too low but high enough for the pepper to attach to it</li>

<h3 class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff9900;"><strong>The case of the clinging balloons:</strong></span></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff9900;"><strong>What you will need:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ul>
<li>A few balloons</li>
<li>A woolly sweater</li>
</ul>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: #ff9900;"><strong>This is what you have to do:</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<ol>
<li>Blow up your balloons and tie them securely</li>
<li>Rub the balloons against your sweater for a few minutes</li>
<li>Now press them against the ceiling</li>
<li>What happens?</li>
<li>What did you do when you rubbed the balloons against your sweater?</li>
<li>How does that make the balloons cling to the ceiling?</li>
<li>Make note of how long they stay there</li>
<li>Do you think there are factors that can make them fall down sooner or hang there for a longer period?</li>
<li>Try boiling a kettle in the room and see what happens (let an adult help here!)</li>
</ol>

<p class="MsoNormal">By rubbing the balloons against your sweater you are charging the balloons with electricity. How? They absorb small particles called electrons, which are negative electrical particles, from the sweater.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Because objects that are electrically charged draws objects that are not electrically charged, the balloons &#8220;stick&#8221; to the ceiling until they are no longer electrically charged.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Normally the balloons will stay there for a long time as the ceiling is a very weak conductor and the electrons flow very slowly through the ceiling because a room is normally very dry. If you room is a little more humid, it will take longer. It may be a good idea to do two experiments, one in dry air and one in humidity and see if your results differ.</p>
